How Opalescence whitening works
We start by checking the condition of your teeth. Whitening gel must not reach untreated decay, so any fillings are dealt with first. The examination and X-ray are covered by insurance.
The whitening itself is then a matter of applying the gel to the teeth. Opalescence contains fluoride and potassium nitrate, which reduce sensitivity during and after the treatment.
Who whitening is suitable for
Whitening works best on natural discolouration and on staining from coffee, tea, red wine or smoking. It does not work on crowns, veneers and fillings — those keep their original shade, which is why they are sometimes replaced afterwards to match.
If you are planning a crown or veneer on a front tooth, it is better to whiten first and choose the shade of the restoration afterwards. Doing it the other way round means the restoration ends up darker than everything around it.
How long results last
Typically one to three years. It depends mostly on how much coffee, tea and red wine you drink and whether you smoke. Teeth pick up staining most easily in the first forty-eight hours after whitening, so it is worth avoiding strongly coloured drinks during that time.
