Taking a tooth out is the last resort, once it cannot be saved. Which category the procedure falls into, and what it will cost, is clear from the X-ray.

Three levels of extraction
The price depends on how readily the tooth comes out of its socket. The difference is not in the tooth itself but in how much work the extraction takes.
- Simple extraction with no sutures — covered by insurance. The tooth has erupted, is firm and can be lifted out with forceps without further intervention.
- Complicated extraction from CZK 1,500. The tooth fractures, has divergent roots or has to be sectioned.
- Surgical extraction from CZK 2,500. The tooth is impacted or below the gum, so the gum has to be raised and the wound sutured.
Wisdom teeth
With wisdom teeth it comes down to position. An erupted wisdom tooth that can be removed conventionally falls under the covered extraction. An impacted or angled one is a surgical extraction from CZK 2,500. The difference is visible on the X-ray, so you know the price in advance.
Aftercare
Keep the gauze in place for the first half hour or so and do not eat until the anaesthetic has worn off — it is easy to bite your lip when you cannot feel it. For the rest of the day avoid rinsing, smoking, hot drinks, saunas and exercise.
The blood clot in the socket is what heals it. If the clot is washed out, the bone is exposed and a painful condition follows that has to be treated again. That is why you should not rinse or drink through a straw on the first day.
Replacing the missing tooth
It is worth replacing a missing tooth before the neighbouring teeth start to tilt into the gap. The options are an implant from CZK 25,000 including the crown or a bridge resting on the teeth either side.
