Root canal treatment is the last chance to save a tooth before extraction becomes the only option. The number of canals, and therefore the price, is known from the X-ray beforehand.
For children up to 17.99, root canal treatment is fully covered by Czech public health insurance.
When a root canal is necessary
When decay reaches the pulp of the tooth, inflammation follows. It will not heal on its own and the pain tends to be strong and throbbing. Root canal treatment means removing the inflamed pulp, cleaning the canals and filling them — which keeps the tooth in place.
Sometimes the tooth does not hurt at all and the inflammation only shows up on an X-ray. It still needs treating, because it can develop into an abscess.
How the treatment works
- X-ray and plan. The image tells us the number and shape of the canals. The X-ray is covered by insurance and means you know the price in advance.
- Anaesthesia and isolation. Treatment is carried out under local anaesthesia, with the tooth isolated by a rubber dam so that no saliva reaches the canals.
- Cleaning and filling. The canals are cleaned, shaped and filled.
- Build-up or crown. A treated tooth is more brittle, so we usually recommend covering it with a crown.
A tooth often darkens after root canal treatment and is more prone to fracture. That is why we generally recommend a crown from CZK 8,500, with a post and core build-up from CZK 4,000 where needed.
Retreatment
When inflammation returns years later, or the canals were not treated along their full length, retreatment is the answer — the old filling material is removed and the canal is treated again. This costs from CZK 1,500 per canal.

Is root canal treatment covered by insurance?
For adults, root canal treatment in the version we provide is above-standard and carries a surcharge. For children up to 17.99 it is covered by Czech public health insurance in full, which is not usual at dental practices.
Is a root canal painful?
The procedure itself is carried out under local anaesthesia, so you feel nothing during it. The worst pain tends to come beforehand, while the pulp is inflamed. The tooth may be tender to bite on for a few days afterwards.
How many visits does it take?
It depends on the state of the tooth. Straightforward cases can be completed in one visit; where inflammation is severe, more visits are needed so the canals can be disinfected between appointments.
Does the tooth need a crown afterwards?
In most cases yes. A treated tooth loses its internal blood supply and becomes more brittle, so it fractures more easily. A crown from CZK 8,500 strengthens it and also deals with the darkening that often follows treatment.
Can every tooth be saved, or does it sometimes have to come out?
A tooth can be saved as long as enough healthy tissue remains and the root is not cracked. If it has broken below bone level or the inflammation is too extensive, we look at extraction and replacement with an implant or a bridge.
